Flambient: Masterclass photography.

“Flambient” style photography is one of the newest techniques to the industry and requires a more advanced knowledge of post-production software to pull off. This is why the number of photographers in any given real estate market using “flambient” is limited.
Ambient.
A photographer that is using “flambient” shooting techniques starts with the ambient shot. This shot forms the most natural shadows and highlights, but contains several artifacts like color casting, which results when light is reflected off an object casting its color on something else.
Flash.
Next, the flash shot is taken from the same position. It contains the most accurate hues and brings an overall brightness to the room. The shadows, on the other hand, appear synthetic.
Ambient + Flash = Flambient.
The two photographs together form the perfect union. The photo editor takes the best elements from both shots and combines them to form a masterclass, magazine quality image that makes the home the star. If the frame includes windows, outdoor window exposures are done for each and brushed into the final photo. Hotspots from ceiling lights or floor burns can also require extra flash layers to correct. (see “Flash Advantage” section.) This high standard for quality is why all our real estate photographers use the “flambient” method for all key rooms and unique selling features of the property.
Bracketing vs. HDR
Bracketing is another technique that we like to use for any additional rooms and exterior photos. It consists of taking multiple exposures of the same image. These exposures are combined by painting in the best elements of each in the final photograph during editing. For example, the underexposed image usually has the best sky. Our technicians prefer this method over HDR (high dynamic range), because the control is left in the hands of the artist verses the camera.
Post-production.
Many photo mills send their HDR and Flambient photos to underpaid laborers overseas to keep their costs down. The skill from technician to technician is not always uniform and they have zero reference to the colors that the photographer experienced in the field. Some photos end up with a fake appearance from poorly done color and tone adjustments.
We take pride in doing all our post processing in-house. That way we can provide:
- consistent quality and style from job to job;
- control color accuracy;
- offer some advanced Photoshop techniques with some being free like adding fire to a fireplace or a screenshot to a television and
- employ AI features as desired.
All our field photographers are trained in Photoshop and Lightroom to ensure they capture all the layered images needed by our technicians to build magazine quality images.
